Stepping into London for the first time was daunting, with its immense size and brisk tempo. I was at a loss for where to start, equipped with just a suitcase and Google Maps. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you adjust to London before commencing your journey at Imperial, enabling you to relish your new urban lifestyle.
Whether you get here weeks in advance or right before the term kicks off, here’s what I wish I had been aware of upon my arrival.
Locate Your Accommodation
Prevent costly hotel expenses by securing housing in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the top choices get snatched up quickly. Opt for a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to dodge lengthy commutes for those early morning lectures.
Crucial Life Administration
Take care of these necessities as soon as you land in London:
- Money Transfers – As an international student, discover a dependable method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card – Obtain one right away for data and navigation, which is critical in an unfamiliar city.
- Bank Account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. An account will be necessary for daily expenses and payments from part-time jobs.
- Student ID Card – This is essential for accessing campus resources, libraries, and student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as possible.
Maximize Your First Week at Imperial
Your inaugural week is vital for your student experience. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to engage. I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society fairs. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university adventure.
Travel Wisely Around London
At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading to a nine-kilometer walk across London. Don’t make my mistake. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for cheaper travel on Tube and bus routes. Walking remains an excellent way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Discover Your Comfort Zones
London can be intimidating, particularly in the beginning. Finding a relatable spot is beneficial. Mine is a local park where I retreat daily for some relaxation. The O2, just a 10-minute stroll away, is another spot I enjoy for unwinding with a film. Seek out your own spaces, whether it’s a café, a bookstore, or a bench by the river, to decompress and refresh.
Explore Your Surroundings
Familiarize yourself with the areas you will frequently visit near your campus and home. Identify the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred dining or coffee locations. Explore well-known landmarks, visit free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will emerge from a little aimless wandering!
Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for disposable ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas get defeated by the wind.
- Participate in unique events to gather memorable tales.
- Do not panic if you feel disoriented; it’s a common feeling at the outset.
You certainly don’t need to have everything planned out from day one. If you’re reading this, you are already ahead of where I stood when I began at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
