Stepping into London felt daunting at first due to its enormity and rapid tempo. With just a suitcase and Google Maps at my disposal, I found myself disoriented. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here’s a guide to help you settle into London prior to your start at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new city life.
Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before classes commence, here’s the guidance I wish I had.
Secure Accommodation First
Steer clear of costly hotels by arranging accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone enjoys the same fortune. Seek a location that’s in close proximity to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning lectures.
Crucial Life Administration
Upon reaching London, promptly handle:
- Money transfers – as an international student, consider utilizing apps such as Wise or Revolut for superior exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one right away for data access and navigation.
- Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and cater to students.
- Student ID card – vital for campus entry, library usage, and obtaining discounts.
The First Week at Imperial is Key
Your inaugural week at Imperial is crucial for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and friends. Participate in Welcome Week events and discover over 350 clubs and societies.
Even if you’re reserved, it’s important to push yourself to engage. I formed strong friendships during campus tours and society stalls. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Navigate Smartly in London
At first, I struggled to comprehend the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers. Don’t make the same error. Obtain a Student Oyster card with an 18+ discount for more economical travel.
However, walking is still a fantastic way to uncover London’s hidden treasures.
Discover Your Relaxation Spots
London can feel overwhelming. Identify a comforting location, such as a park, cafe, or bookstore, where you can unwind and recharge. My favorites include a nearby park and the O2 for cinematic outings.
Get Out and Explore!
Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and home. Spot supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred dining venues.
Visit iconic landmarks, museums, and take unplanned strolls. Some of your fondest memories will arise from moments of being a little lost.
Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas won’t hold up in the wind.
- Participate in unique events to garner unforgettable stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s common initially.
You’re not required to have everything sorted out straight away. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood. Inhale deeply, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
