Stepping into London for the first time was a bit much. The city felt enormous, noisy, and bustling. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself disoriented. If you’re about to go through this, don’t be concerned. Here’s how to adjust to London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to savor your new city life.
Whether you’re getting here early or just right before the term begins, here’s the advice I wished I had received.
Locate a Place to Stay
Arrange your accommodation in advance to evade costly hotel fees. I was lucky, but choices vanish rapidly. Try to secure a spot close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to circumvent lengthy commutes.
Life Administration: Musts
Upon arrival in London, focus on these tasks:
- Money Transfers – As an overseas student, seek an economical method to send money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.
- UK SIM Card – Obtain one right away for connectivity and navigation.
- Bank Account – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are prompt and accommodating for students.
- Student ID Card – Vital for campus entry, library access, and discounts.
The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your inaugural week is essential for connecting with flatmates, peers, and forming friendships. Engage in Welcome Week to discover clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, take part to set the atmosphere for your university journey.
Navigate London Wisely
At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up trekking nine kilometers. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount. Walking is wonderful for uncovering hidden treasures.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can feel intense. Discover a comforting location, such as a park or cafe, to unwind and recharge. My favorite spots include a local park and the O2 for films.
Discover the City
Get to know the local supermarkets, pharmacies, and preferred dining places. Tour notable attractions, free museums, and enjoy spontaneous strolls. Some of the most memorable experiences arise from wandering off the beaten path.
Final Advice for Beginning at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to sidestep charges.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket for stormy weather.
- Participate in unique events for memorable stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s completely normal.
You don’t need to have everything sorted right away. You’re already ahead by reading this. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure.
