Stepping into London for the very first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, vibrant, and bustling. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re on the brink of this experience, don’t fret. Here’s my guidance to ease your transition into London prior to beginning at Imperial, so you can relish your new urban lifestyle.
Whether you come weeks in advance or just before the term kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish had been handed to me upon my arrival.
First and foremost: secure a place to stay
By planning your accommodation early, you can avoid pricey hotel bills. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the prime options are snatched up quickly. Strive for a location close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early morning classes.
Administrative necessities: taking care of the essentials
Once you land in London, promptly take care of these essentials:
- Money transfers – as an international student, identify a trustworthy and economical method to move funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – ensure you have data for navigation in an unfamiliar area. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan soon after your arrival.
- Establishing a bank account – while some banks might require a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Set up an account for your daily expenses and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – this grants you entry to campus buildings, the library, and various student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.
Your initial week at Imperial is paramount
The first week at Imperial is critical. It’s your opportunity to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to engage with over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join the ones that spark your interest.
Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to get involved. I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.
Getting around London: travel wisely
During my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or bus services, which led me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid this by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares.
Walking remains an excellent way to immerse yourself in the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Discover your favorite spots
Initially, London can be emotionally taxing. Having a go-to spot can be comforting – mine is a nearby park where I often go to unwind. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another refuge where I enjoy a movie weekly.
Seek out your own locations, whether a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge and relax.
And don’t overlook the importance of exploration!
Get to know the areas surrounding both campus and your residence. Identify your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, green spaces, and favored eateries or coffee shops.
Visit iconic landmarks, explore complimentary museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and stroll aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from simply getting a bit lost!
Final pointers before diving into Imperial student life
- Acquire a reusable bag – stores usually charge for single-use ones.
- Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas do little against wind.
- Participate in unique events – they create fantastic stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a normal part of the beginning.
You don’t need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was upon starting at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin crafting your London narrative one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
