Stepping into London for the first time can feel overwhelming. The metropolis appeared immense, noisy, and fast-moving. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I found myself uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar scenario, there’s no need to panic. Here’s how to kick off your new life in London before beginning your journey at Imperial, letting you savor the city.
No matter if you arrive weeks ahead or right before term begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received at my arrival.
First and foremost: secure a place to stay
To evade pricey hotel stays, arrange your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the best choices get taken quickly. Aim for a location close to your campus or an efficient Tube line – lengthy commutes aren’t suited for early morning lectures.
Administrative necessities: addressing essential tasks
Upon your arrival in London, tackle these essentials without delay:
- Money transfers – as an international student, find an affordable method to transfer funds from home. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – having mobile data is vital for navigation. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan soon after you arrive.
- Bank account – though some banks may need a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and cater well to students. Establish an account for day-to-day transactions and payments from part-time work.
- Student ID card – this will provide access to campus facilities, library usage, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.
Your inaugural week at Imperial is pivotal
Your first week at Imperial is essential. It’s the time you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and enroll in activities that catch your interest.
Even if you feel reserved, make an effort to engage. I did, and I met some of my dearest friends during campus tours and society information booths. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university journey.
Getting around London: travel wisely
During my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable – avoid making the same mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to navigate the city affordably.
Walking is still an excellent way to explore and uncover hidden treasures in London.
Identify your comfort zones
London can feel intense, especially at the start. Having a sanctuary is helpful – mine is a nearby park where I go to unwind. The O2 is another favorite retreat where I enjoy a movie weekly.
Discover your own havens, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to relax and re-energize.
And remember to venture out!
Get acquainted with your new environment around campus and your residence. Identify the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your go-to food or coffee spots.
Explore notable landmarks, free museums, and take a hop on a red double-decker bus. Many of your cherished memories will arise from unplanned explorations.
Final suggestions before jumping into student life at Imperial
- Acquire a reusable bag – stores often charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can’t withstand strong winds.
- Accept invitations to quirky events – they lead to great stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience initially.
You don’t need to have every detail sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
