Stepping into London for the first time, the city appeared vast, noisy, rapid, and somewhat intimidating. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar scenario, don’t fret. Here’s how to set up your new life in London prior to beginning at Imperial, so you can relish your time in the city.
Whether you’re arriving several weeks early or just on the brink of term, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.
Secure Accommodation
Steer clear of expensive hotel costs by organizing your housing in advance. I was lucky, but not all are. The top choices vanish swiftly! Strive for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to dodge lengthy journeys for early morning lectures.
Crucial Life Administration
Upon reaching London, tackle these priorities without delay:
- Money transfers – as an international student, seek a dependable, cost-effective means to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigation. Secure a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after you arrive.
- Bank account – certain banks necessitate a UK address, but online banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and supportive of students. Open an account for daily expenses and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – this is essential for gaining entry to campus facilities, library access, and student discounts. Get it as soon as possible.
The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial
Your initial week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and join activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to participate. I did and formed close friendships during random campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university journey.
Navigate London Wisely
In my first week, I trekked nine kilometers across London due to confusion surrounding the Tube and buses. It was memorable but disorganized—don’t replicate my experience. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains a fantastic method to embrace the city and unearth hidden treasures.
Discover Your Comfort Zones
London can be emotionally overwhelming at first. Having a comfort zone is beneficial—mine is a nearby park where I retreat daily to unwind. Another is the O2, only 10 minutes away, where I catch films weekly to de-stress.
Identify your own comfort zones, be it a cafe, bookstore, or a riverside bench. These locations provide essential moments for relaxation and rejuvenation.
Discover the City
Get acquainted with commonly frequented areas around your campus and home. Locate your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee spots.
Explore renowned landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for the scenery, and meander without a predetermined plan. Some of your finest memories may arise from getting a little lost!
Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial
- Utilize a reusable bag – stores often levy charges for single-use bags.
- Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective against gusts.
- Participate in unique events – they foster great narratives.
- Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – it’s typical initially.
You don’t need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re perusing this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and kick off your London adventure, one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
