Touching down in London initially struck me as daunting with its expanse and rapid rhythm. Equipped solely with a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to begin. If you find yourself experiencing something similar, there’s no need to stress. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to your new life in London prior to starting at Imperial, ensuring you fully savor your time in the city.
Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just shortly before the term starts, this is the advice I wish I had received upon landing.
Priority One: Secure Accommodation
Prevent expensive hotel expenses by organizing your housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as prime options are swiftly taken. Strive to find a residence close to your campus or a reliable Tube line to simplify those early morning journeys.
Essential Life Admin
Once you arrive in London, swiftly tackle these essential tasks:
- Money Transfers – As an international student, find a trustworthy and cost-effective means to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card – Make sure to acquire a UK SIM card right after arriving so you’ll have data for navigation.
- Bank Account – Some banks may necessitate a UK address, yet digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Establish an account for daily expenses and paychecks from part-time jobs.
- Student ID Card – This is essential for gaining access to campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as early as you can.
Importance of the First Week at Imperial
Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital for your student journey. It’s the opportunity to connect with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Engage with Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and immerse yourself in activities that captivate you.
Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to join in. I did, and it resulted in forming bonds with some of my closest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week will establish the foundation for your university experience.
Smart Travel in London
In my first week, I ended up walking nine kilometers across London due to confusion regarding the Tube and buses. It was an unforgettable but hectic experience. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to navigate the Tube and buses economically.
Walking remains an excellent approach to experiencing the city and uncovering hidden treasures.
Finding Comfort in the City
London can initially feel emotionally taxing. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a park nearby that I visit daily for relaxation. The O2, located just 10 minutes from my place, is another preferred spot for winding down with a film.
Identify your own comforting locations, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to assist you in unwinding and resetting.
Explore and Discover
Get to know the frequently visited areas around your campus and home. Locate the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee spots.
Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, hop on a red double-decker bus, and explore without a plan. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from embracing a little disorientation!
Final Tips for Starting at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to avoid charges for single-use bags in stores.
- Invest in a waterproof coat since umbrellas aren’t effective in windy conditions.
- Participate in unique events for memorable experiences.
- Don’t stress if you feel a bit lost at first – it’s completely normal.
You don’t need to have everything figured out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
