Upon my first arrival in London, I found the city to be vast and intense. Equipped with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, there’s no need to stress. Here are some tips to get your new life in London organized before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to savor your newcomer experience in the city.

Whether you arrive several weeks in advance or just before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.

Secure Your Accommodation

To steer clear of pricey hotel costs, arrange your housing early. I was fortunate, but not everyone has that luck, as the best choices disappear swiftly. Aim to find a residence close to your campus or on a dependable Tube route, since long commutes can be challenging for early morning classes.

Administrative Essentials

Once you’re in London, tackle these key tasks swiftly:

  • Money transfers – International students require a dependable, cost-effective method to receive funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut assist in avoiding unfavorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Without mobile data, exploring a new area proves difficult. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan soon after your arrival.
  • Bank account – While some banks necessitate a UK address, digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job deposits.
  • Student ID card – This grants you access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as possible.

The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is vital. You’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover more than 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, try to engage. I made lifelong friends during spontaneous campus tours and society stalls. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Navigating London Efficiently

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in an exhausting nine-kilometer trek across London. It was memorable yet chaotic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for cheaper travel. However, walking remains a wonderful way to uncover the city and its hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be daunting, especially at the outset. Having a comfort area can be beneficial. For me, it’s the park adjacent to my home and the nearby O2 for films. Identify your own spots, like a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can unwind and recharge.

Discover the City

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Find the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred food or coffee spots. Explore notable landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your finest experiences will come from wandering a bit off the beaten path.

Final Advice Before Commencing at Imperial

  • Bring a reusable bag – Many shops charge for single-use bags.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas aren’t effective in windy conditions.
  • Join unique events – They provide great stories.
  • Do not fret if you feel disoriented – It’s common at the beginning.

There’s no need to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, secure your Oyster card, and start your London narrative one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.
