Stepping into London for the first time felt overwhelming. The city appeared expansive, loud, and bustling, which left me feeling apprehensive. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about my next moves. If you’re about to go through this, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adapting to your new life in London before your journey at Imperial begins, ensuring you make the most of the city.

Whether you’re arriving weeks early or just in time for the term to commence, here’s the advice I wish I had received upon my entry.

First Priority: Secure Your Accommodation

To steer clear of expensive hotel bills, organize your lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the best choices are quickly snatched up. Try to secure a place close to your campus or a convenient Tube line – lengthy commutes to early classes can be challenging.

Key Administrative Tasks

Upon your arrival in London, swiftly tackle these essential tasks:

  • Financial management – as an international student, find a dependable and cost-effective method to transfer funds from your home country. Apps like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.
  • Getting a UK SIM card – having mobile data is vital for navigating a new city. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.
  • Setting up a bank account – while some banks may require a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodating for students. Open an account for daily expenses and any part-time earnings.
  • Obtaining your student ID card – this is crucial for utilizing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Get it as soon as possible.

The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s the opportunity to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week activities to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join those that pique your interest.

Even if you’re shy, do your best to join in. I did, and I met several of my closest friends during campus tours and society events. Your initial week sets the foundation for your university experience.

Wise Travel in London

<pDuring my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, so I ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic but memorable – don’t repeat my mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable travel on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains a fantastic way to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures. Explore on foot to genuinely connect with the culture.

Find Your Safe Havens

London can be emotionally intense at first. Identifying a comfort space is beneficial – for me, it’s the nearby park where I relax every day. My second location is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy watching movies weekly to unwind.

Discover your own comfort spots, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These places offer a well-deserved escape.

Wander and Explore

Familiarize yourself with the commonly visited places near campus and your residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and ride a red double-decker bus for the sights. Meander without a plan – some of your greatest memories will come from getting a little lost!

Final Hints Before Diving into Imperial Life

  • Carry a reusable bag – many shops charge for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof coat – umbrellas can struggle against wind-driven rain.
  • Welcome unusual events – they create the best narratives.
  • Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience at first.

You don’t need to have everything figured out on day one. By reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
