Getting to London was quite intimidating. The city buzzed with noise, moved at a rapid pace, and I felt lost with just a suitcase and Google Maps to guide me. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before launching your journey at Imperial, allowing you to savor the novelty of being in a new city.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before the term kicks off, here’s the tips I wish I had upon my initial arrival.

Secure your living arrangements

Steer clear of pricey hotel expenses by arranging accommodation ahead of time. I got lucky, but not everyone does, as the finest options get snatched up quickly. Try to find a place close to your campus or near a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Administrative tasks: organizing the necessities

After arriving in London, tackle these fundamental tasks:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, look for a trustworthy and cost-effective means to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain one right away to ensure you have data for navigating.
  • Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are speedy and suitable for students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time salary deposits.
  • Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus, library services, and student discounts. Obtain it at the earliest opportunity.

Your initial week at Imperial is important

The first week at Imperial significantly impacts your student experience. This is when you will meet flatmates, classmates, and potential lifelong friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and enroll in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you feel introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I made some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society booths. Your initial week lays the foundation for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I trekked nine kilometers across London because I was confused about the Tube and bus systems. It was unforgettable but quite disorganized. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares.

Walking remains the best way to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your favorite spots

Initially, London may feel emotionally taxing. Finding a comforting location is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I unwind daily. My second favorite is the O2, just ten minutes away, where I watch films every week.

Discover your own places, such as a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can relax and recharge.

Go on adventures!

Familiarize yourself with your campus and residential areas. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred dining or coffee venues.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and wander without an agenda. Some of your most cherished memories will come from the adventure of getting a bit lost!

Final pointers before immersing in Imperial student life

  • Utilize a reusable bag – stores typically charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are not very useful in the wind.
  • Participate in quirky events – they create fantastic stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common first experience.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London narrative one red bus trip and Tesco visit at a time.
