Stepping foot in London for the first time was quite a lot to handle. The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to acclimatize to your new life in London prior to commencing at Imperial, so you can savor your time in the city.
No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or just ahead of term, here’s the guidance I wish I had upon my arrival.
Secure Your Accommodation
Steer clear of pricey hotel stays by arranging your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone experiences the same. The best places vanish quickly! Try to find a location near your campus or a dependable Tube line, as lengthy commutes aren’t great for early classes.
Administrative Matters: Key Essentials to Address
When you get to London, make sure to tackle these essentials swiftly:
- Money Transfers – As an international learner, seek a trustworthy, cost-effective method to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide better currency exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card – Navigating a new city can be challenging without data. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan soon after your arrival.
- Setting Up a Bank Account – Some banks need a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and friendly towards students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID Card – This is essential for entering campus buildings, libraries, and enjoying student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as you can.
The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your inaugural week at Imperial is crucial. It’s when you meet your flatmates, classmates, and prospective friends. Take advantage of Welcome Week to engage with over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I connected with close friends during campus tours and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.
Travel Wisely in London
In my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers throughout London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid making the same mistake. Get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced Tube and bus fares. However, walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.
Discover Your Favorite Places
London can be emotionally intense. Finding a comfortable spot is beneficial. My refuge is a local park where I relax daily. My secondary location is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy movies each week. Locate your own havens, be it a café, bookstore, or a riverside bench, where you can unwind.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and home. Unearth local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite dining spots. Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will arise from spontaneous explorations.
Final Recommendations Before Starting at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use ones.
- Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are ineffective in windy weather.
- Participate in unique events – they create wonderful stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s common at first.
It’s not necessary to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
