Stepping into London for the very first time was daunting due to its size, noise, and rapid tempo. With just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position soon, there’s no need to worry. Here’s my guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London prior to commencing at Imperial, allowing you to savor the experience of being a newcomer in the city.

Whether you are arriving a few weeks before or right at the start of the term, here’s the counsel I wish someone had shared with me upon my arrival.

First order of business: secure your accommodation

Avoid the high costs of hotels by organizing your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the finest choices tend to get booked quickly. Aim to find a residence near your campus or close to a dependable Tube line, as early morning lectures can be challenging if you’re situated more than an hour away.

Administrative tasks: handling the necessary details

There are several things you should ideally take care of as soon as you arrive in London:

  • How to send or receive money – as an international student like myself, you will need a trustworthy and affordable method to transfer money from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut helped me avoid poor exchange rates.
  • Obtaining a UK SIM card – lacking data can leave you without directions, which is not ideal in a brand new area or country. Acquire a UK SIM card with data as soon as you land.
  • Establishing a bank account – some banks require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Setting up a bank account promptly is necessary for everyday transactions and to receive payment for any part-time work during your studies.
  • Collecting your student ID card – this grants you access to everything: campus buildings, library privileges, student discounts at eateries and shops – literally, everything! Retrieve your student ID card as soon as possible.

Your initial week at Imperial is vital

The first week at Imperial is pivotal to your student experience. This is the time when you will meet your flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and enroll in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re apprehensive, make an effort to attend. I did, and it was during random campus tours and various society booths that I met some of my closest friends. Your initial week at Imperial establishes the foundation for your university journey ahead.

Navigating London: travel wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London to see the sights. It was chaotic yet memorable – but don’t replicate my experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card as soon as possible and apply for the 18+ discount for cheaper travel on the Tube and buses throughout London.

Nonetheless, walking remains the best method to absorb the city’s atmosphere and culture. There are many hidden treasures in London waiting to be discovered by simply wandering around.

Identify your comforting locations

London can feel emotionally intense, particularly at the beginning. Finding a comforting place can really help – for me, it’s the park near my residence. I visit daily to breathe and recharge. My second favorite place is the O2, just a 10-minute journey away, where I go weekly to watch a film and relax.

Discover your own areas that provide comfort in the bustling city, be it a café, a bookstore, or a bench by the river. Having these spots to unwind and refresh will prove to be more beneficial than you might expect.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the most frequented areas near campus and home. Locate your nearest local supermarket, pharmacy, parks, green spaces, and your go-to spots for meals or coffee.

The iconic landmarks are also worth a visit. Use your weekends to uncover your new city. Explore free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the views, and stroll around aimlessly. Some of your best memories will stem from a little bit of wandering!
