Stepping into London was a bit daunting with its enormity, clamor, and speed. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt lost on where to start. If you find yourself in the same boat, there’s no need to fret. Here are some tips to help you acclimate to London before your time at Imperial begins, making the most of your new life in the city.

Whether you’re landing early or right before the term kicks off, here’s what I wish I had known upon my arrival.

First things first: secure your living arrangements

Steer clear of pricey hotel rates by arranging accommodations ahead of time. I got lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Look for a residence near campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Administrative tasks: organizing necessary items

As soon as you arrive, handle these key essentials:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, find an economical method to send money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.
  • UK SIM card – vital for navigation and staying connected. Acquire one right after arriving.
  • Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Open an account for handling transactions and receiving part-time job wages.
  • Student ID card – essential for using campus amenities, libraries, and availing student discounts. Collect it as soon as possible.

The inaugural week at Imperial is pivotal

Your first week at Imperial is significant for meeting flatmates, classmates, and forging friendships. Participate in Welcome Week activities, check out clubs and societies, and involve yourself in things that spark your interest.

Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and made lifelong friends during campus tours and society events. This week will shape the journey of your university experience.

Getting around London: be smart about travel

At first, I was oblivious to the workings of the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer trek across London. Don’t repeat my error—obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to save on travel costs.

Walking remains a fantastic way to navigate the city and stumble upon hidden treasures.

Identify your cozy spots

London can feel intimidating. Discover a favorite spot, like a park, café, or bookstore, where you can unwind and refresh. My go-to places are a nearby park and the O2, where I enjoy weekly movie nights.

And remember to explore!

Get to know your campus and the areas around your home. Find nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and local eateries.

Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride on a double-decker bus, and roam without an itinerary. Some of your fondest memories will come from adventuring a little off track!

Final pieces of advice before immersing yourself in Imperial student life

  • Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.
  • Get a waterproof jacket since umbrellas may not hold up against the wind.
  • Attend unique events for unforgettable stories.
  • Don’t fret if you feel a bit lost at first; it’s completely normal.

You don’t need to have it all sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a moment to relax, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
