Stepping into London for the first time was quite an experience. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and bustling. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adjusting to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to make the most of your time in the city.
Whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before the term begins, here’s the advice I wish I had received upon my arrival.
First things first: secure your accommodation
To steer clear of pricey hotel expenses, arrange your lodging as early as possible. I was lucky, but not everyone has the same fortune, as the prime choices are quickly snatched up. Target a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for early classes.
Administrative tasks: taking care of the essentials
Once in London, attend to these essentials swiftly:
- Money transfers – as an international student, find a budget-friendly method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide attractive exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one promptly for data access and navigation in a new environment.
- Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Open an account for day-to-day transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – this provides access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Get it as soon as you can.
Your initial week at Imperial is key
Your first week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential new friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re introverted, make an effort to join in. I did, and made some of my closest friends during campus tours and society functions. Your initial week lays the groundwork for your university journey.
Getting around London: travel wisely
<pThroughout my first week, I walked nine kilometers around London due to my unfamiliarity with the Tube and buses. Avoid my blunder. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.
Walking is still an excellent way to experience the city and uncover hidden gems.
Discover your cozy spots
Initially, London can be emotionally taxing. Identifying a comforting location is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I unwind daily. The O2, just a 10-minute stroll from home, is another place where I refresh weekly by catching a movie.
Seek out your own comfort spots, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.
And remember to discover!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and home. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite food or coffee outlets.
Explore popular landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and roam aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from getting a little lost!
Final pointers before you dive into Imperial student life
- Utilize a reusable bag – stores often charge for disposable ones.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective against wind.
- Participate in unusual events – they create great stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel unsure – it’s normal in the beginning.
You don’t need to have everything resolved on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already beyond where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
