Arriving in London was initially daunting due to its size and quick rhythm. With a single suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar boat, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimatize to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, ensuring you can appreciate the city.
Whether you show up weeks in advance or just days before classes commence, here are the insights I wish I had upon my arrival.
Secure Accommodation
To avoid expensive hotel costs, book your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the prime choices disappear swiftly. Try to find a place close to your campus or an efficient Tube line to make morning commutes less stressful.
Administrative Essentials
As soon as you reach London, focus on the following:
- Money transfers – as an international student, identify a trustworthy and economical method for transferring funds from home. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide better currency exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – ensure you have mobile data for navigation in an unfamiliar area. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan right after landing.
- Bank account – some traditional banks require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and catering to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – this grants you access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Secure it as quickly as possible.
The Initial Week at Imperial
Your first week at Imperial is significant. It’s when you’ll meet flatmates, fellow students, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join the ones that pique your interest.
Even if you feel shy, make an effort to get involved. I formed friendships with some of my closest mates during casual campus tours and society booths. Your initial week lays the groundwork for your university experience.
Getting Around London: Travel Wisely
At first, I didn’t grasp the Tube or bus systems and ended up walking nine kilometers through London. It was unforgettable, yet a bit chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel cost-effectively.
Walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city and find hidden treasures.
Discover Your Safe Havens
London can be emotionally taxing. Identifying a comfort spot can help – mine is a local park where I go to unwind. The O2, just ten minutes away from my place, is another venue I frequent weekly to decompress.
Seek out your own havens, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can relax and recharge.
Wander!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll visit most around campus and home. Locate your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee spots.
Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus for a scenic view. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from getting a bit lost!
Last-Minute Advice Before Immersing in Imperial Life
- Get a reusable bag – shops often impose charges for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can struggle against the wind.
- Embrace unusual events – they lead to wonderful stories.
- Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience at the beginning.
You don’t need to have everything sorted from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
