When I first landed in London, the city appeared vast. It was noisy, bustling, and somewhat intimidating. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to go through this, relax. Here’s my guidance to help you adapt to London before commencing your studies at Imperial, enabling you to make the most of your new urban life.

Whether you arrive several weeks ahead or just before the term kicks off, here’s the insight I wish someone had shared with me.

Secure accommodation

Prevent spending a fortune on hotels by arranging your living situation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is. The prime spots fill up fast! Try to find a place close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to bypass lengthy travels to those early lectures.

Administrative necessities

Upon your arrival in London, address these must-dos:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, seek a dependable, budget-friendly method to wire money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – acquire one promptly to ensure you have internet for navigation in an unfamiliar city.
  • Bank account – some financial institutions ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish an account for managing transactions and receiving part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – vital for entering campus facilities, libraries, and enjoying student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.

Significance of your initial week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is pivotal. It’s when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and get engaged in activities that appeal to you.

Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I encountered some of my dearest friends during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. Your first week sets the foundation for your academic experience.

Navigate London wisely

In my initial week, I was clueless about the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers through London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for economical travel.

Walking remains the best way to immerse yourself in the city’s ambiance. You’ll stumble upon hidden treasures by exploring on foot.

Identify your cozy spots

London can feel overwhelming, especially at first. Having a comforting location is beneficial – mine is the park near my residence. I frequent it daily for some relaxation. My second favorite place is the O2, just a 10-minute jaunt away, where I catch movies weekly.

Discover your personal comfort zones, whether it’s a cafe, a bookstore, or a riverside bench. These areas are essential for unwinding and rejuvenating.

Discover the city!

Familiarize yourself with the frequently traveled areas near campus and your home. Identify the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.

Tour iconic landmarks, check out free museums, hop on a red double-decker bus, and meander aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will arise from those moments of getting a bit lost!

Final thoughts before embracing Imperial life

  • Bring a reusable bag – stores impose charges for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be futile against wind.
  • Participate in unique events – they lead to great anecdotes.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience at first.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus journey and Tesco visit at a time.
