Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city felt immense, bustling, and quick-moving. Armed with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself at a loss for where to start. If you’re facing something similar, don’t fret. Here’s my guidance to help you acclimate to London before your classes begin at Imperial, so you can fully embrace the adventure of being new in this vibrant city.
Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the semester starts, here’s the counsel I wish I had received upon getting here.
Secure Your Accommodation
Sidestep pricey hotel fees by arranging your housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone gets that fortune, as the prime choices tend to disappear fast. Try to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to lessen long journeys for early morning lectures.
Important Administrative Tasks
As soon as you’re in London, tackle these vital tasks without delay:
- Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one swiftly to ensure you won’t be stranded without data for navigating.
- Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and cater to students, essential for everyday purchases and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – crucial for entering campus buildings, utilizing the library, and availing student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.
The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial
Your initial week at Imperial holds significant importance for your student journey. Meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Dive into Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that spark your interest.
Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did, and I formed close friendships during campus tours and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your academic adventure.
Smart Travel in London
At first, I struggled with navigating the Tube or buses and ended up trekking nine kilometers across London. It was hectic yet unforgettable. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable transportation.
Walking remains an excellent way to explore the city and stumble upon hidden treasures.
Discover Your Comfort Zones
London can feel emotionally intense. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a close-by park where I take a moment to breathe and recharge. The O2, just a 10-minute walk away, is another place I enjoy weekly for a movie break.
Identify your own comforting locations, whether it be a café, bookstore, or riverside seat, to relax and rejuvenate.
Explore the City Thoroughly
Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate nearby grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to food or coffee places.
Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, hop on a double-decker bus for great views, and explore without a specific agenda. Some of your fondest memories will stem from wandering aimlessly.
Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial
- Utilize a reusable bag – shops impose charges for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t hold up well in windy conditions.
- Partake in unique events – they provide excellent stories.
- Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience initially.
You don’t have to have everything mapped out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already beyond where I was when I first arrived at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco shopping trip at a time.
