Stepping into London for the first time was a bit daunting due to its scale, noise, and speed. Equipped with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on how to start. If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here are my tips to help you acclimate to London before your journey at Imperial, ensuring you make the most of the city.
Whether you come weeks in advance or right before classes, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.
First things first: secure accommodation
Arrange your living situation early to steer clear of pricey hotel stays. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The prime options disappear quickly, so try to find a residence close to your campus or along a reliable Tube line to minimize commuting time.
Life admin: sorting out the necessary essentials
Once you arrive in London, tackle these priorities promptly:
- Money transfers – as an overseas student, discover a trustworthy, cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one right away for data access and navigation in your new surroundings.
- Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling offer quick and student-friendly setup. Open an account for everyday transactions and payments for part-time work.
- Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as you can.
Your initial week at Imperial is crucial
Your first week at Imperial is pivotal for your student experience. It’s the time you connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Join in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and engage in what piques your interest.
Even if you struggle with shyness, make an effort to get involved. I formed bonds with some of my dearest friends through campus explorations and society booths. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university journey.
Getting around London: be smart about travel
During my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers throughout London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid my error by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.
Walking remains the best way to delve into the city and its culture, uncovering hidden treasures.
Discover your comfort zones
London can initially feel emotionally intense. Having a favorite spot to retreat to aids – mine is a nearby park where I relax daily. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another location where I enjoy unwinding weekly with a film.
Find your own comforting spaces, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.
And don’t forget to explore!
Get to know the areas surrounding your campus and home. Locate your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred eateries or coffee shops.
Check out iconic landmarks, explore free museums, ride a double-decker bus for the views, and wander without a specific itinerary. Some of your best experiences will come from a little detour!
Final tips before immersing yourself in Imperial student life
- Grab a reusable bag – many shops levy charges for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t hold up well in the wind.
- Agree to unusual events – they often lead to great anecdotes.
- Don’t fret if you feel confused – it’s common for everyone at first.
You don’t need to have everything figured out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
