My arrival in London was a bit daunting at first. The city felt enormous, noisy, and fast-moving. Equipped with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself disoriented. If you’re about to go through the same experience, don’t fret. Here are some tips to help you acclimate to London before you begin your journey at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new life in the city.
Whether you are arriving early or just prior to the term, here’s what I wish I had known upon my initial arrival.
Secure Your Accommodation
Book your accommodation well in advance to steer clear of costly hotel expenses. I was lucky, but not everyone shares the same fortune, as the finest options disappear quickly. Target a location close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize travel time for early classes.
Important Life Admin Tasks
Once you’re in London, focus on these essential tasks:
- Money transfers – For international students, finding an affordable way to transfer money is essential. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – Acquire one right away for data access and navigation.
- Bank account – Look into digital banks such as Monzo or Starling for a swift and student-friendly setup. An account will be necessary for transactions and receiving part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – This is vital for utilizing campus amenities, libraries, and securing student discounts. Obtain it as quickly as possible.
Your First Week at Imperial
Your inaugural week is crucial for your student journey. It’s when you will meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week events to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies.
Even if you’re feeling shy, make an effort to join in. I made some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society functions. Your first week lays the foundation for your university experience.
Navigate London Smartly
At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet disorganized. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.
Walking remains the best method to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Discover Your Comfort Spots
London can feel overwhelming at times. Having a comforting place is beneficial. For me, it’s a local park and the O2 for movies. Identify your own relaxation spots, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to recharge.
Explore Your Surroundings
Get to know the areas around your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and go-to eating spots.
Tour popular landmarks, visit free museums, and enjoy a ride on a double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from unplanned escapades.
Final Thoughts for Your Life at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – Shops charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas aren’t very useful in windy conditions.
- Participate in unique events – They often provide excellent stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel out of place – It’s a common feeling at the start.
There’s no need to have every detail sorted out right away. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began my time at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure step by step.
