Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city seemed enormous, noisy, and exceedingly dynamic. Armed with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to begin. If you find yourself in the same boat, there’s no need to fret. Here’s my guidance to help you acclimate to London before commencing your studies at Imperial, allowing you to embrace your new life in the city.
Whether you land weeks in advance or just prior to the start of term, here’s the counsel I wish had been shared with me.
Secure Your Housing
Arrange your living situation early to sidestep costly hotel fees. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The prime choices disappear quickly, so try to locate a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early classes.
Administrative Tasks: Key Items to Address
After arriving in London, make these tasks a priority:
- Money Transfers – As an overseas student, find a trustworthy and cost-effective way to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card – Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan as soon as possible for navigation and connectivity.
- Bank Account – Some banks might require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and cater to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
- Student ID Card – This is vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it promptly.
The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your inaugural week at Imperial holds great importance. It’s the time when you connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to delve into over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you feel timid, challenge yourself to take part. I formed close friendships during random tours of the campus and at society events. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.
Navigating London: Travel Wisely
At first, I was bewildered by the Tube and buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced travel expenses. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city and its hidden treasures.
Discover Your Favorite Spots
London can be mentally taxing. Identify a comfortable spot, such as a park, café, or bookstore, where you can unwind and recharge. For me, it’s a local park and the O2 for watching films. These locations provide solace in the bustling city.
Discover the City
Get acquainted with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and go-to dining spots. Take the time to visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and savor what the city has to offer. Some of your fondest memories will arise from spontaneous exploits.
Final Insights for Life as an Imperial Student
- Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas can’t withstand strong winds.
- Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
- Don’t panic if you feel disoriented; it’s entirely normal at the beginning.
You don’t have to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you are reading this, you are already doing better than I was at this stage. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your journey in London step by step.
