Stepping foot in London for the very first time was a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, noisy, and full of energy. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re gearing up for this experience, relax. Here’s my guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to relish your new urban life.

Regardless of whether you’re arriving weeks in advance or just before the semester kicks off, here’s the insight I wish I had received.

Secure your accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotel costs by organizing your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The best options disappear quickly, so look for something close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to eliminate lengthy commutes.

Administrative necessities

Take care of these essential matters shortly after reaching London:

  • Money transfers – as an overseas student, discover a trustworthy and cost-effective method for transferring money. Services like Wise or Revolut can help you sidestep unfavorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain one promptly to avoid feeling lost without data in an unfamiliar city.
  • Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling offer quick setups and are student-friendly. Open an account for routine transactions and part-time job earnings.
  • Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, using the library, and enjoying student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as you can.

Your first week at Imperial is vital

Your initial week at Imperial is essential. It’s the time to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate actively in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-operated clubs and societies. Even if you’re a bit reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I forged some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Getting around London: smart travel

In my first week, I ended up walking nine kilometers throughout London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for cheaper travel options. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Identify your favorite spots

London can be quite emotionally intense. Locate a comforting place, such as a park, cafe, bookstore, or a riverside bench, for moments of relaxation and rejuvenation. For me, it’s the park nearby and the O2 for enjoying movies.

Discover the city

Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to eateries. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus for amazing views. Some of your most cherished memories will emerge from wandering without a specific plan.

Final suggestions before your time at Imperial

  • Obtain a reusable bag – shops apply charges for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t hold up well against strong winds.
  • Participate in unusual events – they make for incredible stories.
  • Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at the outset.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
