Stepping into London for the first time was quite daunting. The city appeared enormous, bustling, and energetic. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I was left uncertain about where to start. If you’re on the cusp of this experience, fret not. Here’s my guidance to ease your transition into London prior to commencing at Imperial, enabling you to appreciate the city as a newcomer.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term begins, here’s the counsel I wished I had received upon my arrival.

First things first: secure accommodation

Prevent pricey hotel expenses by organizing your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the prime options vanish quickly. Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to dodge lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Essential tasks: managing necessary matters

Upon arriving in London, promptly tackle these essentials:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy and economical method to receive funds from home. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide better currency exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain a UK SIM card promptly to ensure you have data for navigation.
  • Bank account – consider digital banks like Monzo or Starling, which are quick and welcoming to students. Open an account for daily transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – this grants you access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Secure it as soon as you can.

Your inaugural week at Imperial is pivotal

Your initial week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s the time you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Dive into Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, encourage yourself to join in. I did and formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society stalls. This week shapes the path for your university experience.

Exploring London: travel wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to traverse nine kilometers on foot across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid this by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares.

Walking remains the best way to experience the city and its culture, unveiling hidden treasures.

Discover your favorite spots

Initially, London can be emotionally taxing. Having a comfort zone aids – mine is a nearby park I visit daily to unwind. Another is the O2, just a 10-minute journey away, where I watch movies weekly to decompress.

Identify your spots, like a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, for relaxation and rejuvenation.

And make sure to explore!

Get acquainted with your campus and local environment. Find your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.

Visit iconic sites, explore free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the views, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from a little bit of wandering!

Final recommendations before immersing yourself in the Imperial student experience

  • Carry a reusable bag – stores often impose a charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas fail in windy weather.
  • Participate in unique events – they provide excellent stories.
  • Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling initially.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was at the outset of my time at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
