Stepping into London for the very first time was quite a lot to take in. The city felt immense, bustling, and full of energy. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I was at a loss regarding where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to help you adjust to life in London before your journey begins at Imperial, enabling you to fully appreciate the experience of being new in the city.
No matter whether you arrive several weeks in advance or just prior to the term kicking off, here’s the guidance I wish had been shared with me when I first got here.
Secure your accommodation
Don’t get stuck with pricey hotel fees by arranging your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has the same fortune, as the finest options tend to vanish swiftly. Seek a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes for early morning lectures.
Important life tasks: key essentials to handle
After you arrive in London, tackle these important tasks without delay:
- Money transfers – as an international student, discover an economical method for transferring funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide more favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – make sure you have data for navigation. Obtain a UK SIM card shortly after you arrive.
- Bank account – some traditional banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Open an account for your daily spending and part-time income.
- Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Get this as soon as you can.
Your first week at Imperial is critical
The initial week at Imperial is essential for your experience as a student. It’s when you will meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re a bit reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I stepped outside my comfort zone and formed lasting friendships during campus tours and at society events. This week significantly influences the rest of your university adventure.
Understanding London: smart travel tips
During my first week, I struggled with navigating the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer trek across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Don’t repeat my error. Get yourself a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable travel on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains an excellent way to soak in the city and its vibrant culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures just by exploring on foot.
Identify your comfort spots
Initially, London can feel quite emotionally intense. Establishing a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a nearby park that I visit daily to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, merely a 10-minute walk away, where I catch films each week to relax.
Seek out your own safe havens, whether it’s a café, a bookstore, or a quiet bench by the river. These locations can be more impactful than you might realize.
Discover the city!
Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Identify the nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred eateries or coffee shops.
Explore iconic attractions. Dedicate your weekends to investigating your new city. Visit museums with free admission. Take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the scenery. Wander aimlessly. Some of your best memories will stem from moments of delightful getting lost!
Final pointers before diving into student life at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use options.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas often fail in strong winds.
- Participate in unique events – they’ll create memorable anecdotes.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s common at first.
There’s no need to have everything figured out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was upon my arrival at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
