Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city felt immense, noisy, and bustling. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I sensed a disorientation. If you’re on the verge of this experience, don’t fret. Here’s how to transition smoothly into your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to savor the city.

No matter if you arrive well in advance or just before classes begin, here are the tips I wish had been shared with me.

First and foremost: secure your accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotel stays by arranging housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The prime options are snatched up quickly, so strive for a location near your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize commutes.

Administrative essentials: taking care of necessary tasks

When you land in London, focus on these crucial tasks:

  • Currency transfers – as an international student, look for a trustworthy, cost-effective method to send money. Applications such as Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • SIM card for the UK – acquire one right away for data usage and navigation in a new location.
  • Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – vital for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as early as you can.

The initial week at Imperial is paramount

Your first week at Imperial is essential. It’s the time you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-organized clubs and societies and register for activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to engage. I did, and I found some of my closest friends during campus tours and society booths. Your initial week shapes the foundation of your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, the Tube and buses were unfamiliar to me, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was an unforgettable yet frantic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains a fantastic option to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover your favorite spots

London can be daunting, particularly in the beginning. Having a familiar place is helpful – mine is a nearby park where I go to unwind. Another is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I watch films weekly.

Identify your own havens like a café, bookstore, or riverside bench for relaxation and rejuvenation.

And remember to explore!

Acquaint yourself with your new environment around campus and your residence. Find the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your go-to food or coffee spots.

Check out famous landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a classic red double-decker bus for the views. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting a little lost!

Final pointers before diving into Imperial student life

  • Carry a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof coat – umbrellas are futile against the wind.
  • Participate in unique events – they yield fantastic stories.
  • Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – it’s common for everyone initially.

You don’t need to have every detail sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
