By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing
Upon my first arrival in London, the city appeared vast, noisy, fast-paced, and a bit daunting. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before beginning your journey at Imperial, allowing you to fully embrace your new urban adventure.
Whether you’re getting in weeks in advance or just before classes start, here’s the counsel I wish I had received.
Secure Accommodation
Prevent costly hotel expenses by arranging your housing promptly. I was lucky, but not everyone is. The best options vanish swiftly, so aim for a location near your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long travel times for early morning lectures.
Essential Administrative Tasks
Tackle these vital tasks soon after you reach London:
- Money Transfers – As an international student, find a trustworthy and economical method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.
- UK SIM Card – Navigating a new area is tough without data. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan as soon as possible.
- Bank Account – Some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater well to students. Establish an account for daily expenses and part-time job revenues.
- Student ID Card – This card is essential for entering campus facilities, utilizing libraries, and benefiting from student discounts. Pick it up at your earliest opportunity.
Your First Week at Imperial
The initial week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you will connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage with Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re a bit reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I formed some of my closest friendships during spontaneous campus tours and at society booths. This week sets a foundational experience for your university life.
Getting Around London
During my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading me to trek nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid my blunder by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced Tube and bus fares. Walking remains a fantastic method to discover the city and stumble upon hidden treasures.
Identify Your Relaxation Spots
London can feel overwhelming, especially at first. Having a go-to comfort spot is beneficial. For me, it’s the park near my home, where I unwind daily. My second favorite is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I enjoy watching movies each week. Find your own places, such as a café, bookstore, or a riverside bench, where you can chill and recharge.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with your new neighborhood around campus and home. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your favorite dining or coffee venues. Check out well-known landmarks, explore free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and stroll aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will be created from getting slightly lost!
Additional Advice
- Carry a reusable bag – stores typically charge for single-use options.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas struggle against wind.
- Participate in unique events – they create wonderful stories.
- Don’t stress about feeling lost – it’s a common feeling initially.
You don’t need to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
