Entering London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city felt immense, noisy, and bustling. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you are about to venture into this, don’t be concerned. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adapting to life in London before you commence at Imperial, allowing you to truly appreciate the city.
No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term begins, here’s the counsel I wish I had received upon my arrival.
First things first: secure your accommodation
Prevent pricey hotel expenditures by organizing your housing in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, since the best options vanish quickly. Strive to live near your campus or a dependable Tube line to evade lengthy travels to morning classes.
Life administration: taking care of the essentials
As soon as you land in London, take care of these essentials without delay:
- Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy, cost-effective method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better currency exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigation in an unfamiliar area. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.
- Setting up a bank account – certain banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and cater to students. Open an account for daily expenses and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – this provides entry to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.
Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal
Your first week at Imperial is vital. It’s the time to meet roommates, classmates, and potential friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies aligned with your interests.
Even if you’re hesitant, challenge yourself to join in. I did and made lasting friendships during campus tours and society events. Your initial week sets the precedent for your university journey.
Getting around London: smart travel
During my first week, I struggled to grasp the Tube system and buses, ultimately walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic experience. Avoid my error. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for cheaper Tube and bus fares.
Walking remains the finest way to immerse yourself in the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify your places of comfort
Initially, London can be emotionally taxing. Having a go-to place can be beneficial – mine is a park close to my home where I relax daily. The O2, just ten minutes away, is another venue I frequent weekly for a movie.
Seek your own comfort areas, whether that be a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These spots provide essential reprieve and rejuvenation.
And remember to discover!
Familiarize yourself with the key areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred eateries or coffee joints.
Tour iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and experience a ride on a red double-decker bus for the views. Some of your fondest memories will stem from occasional detours.
Final tips before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life
- Utilize a reusable bag – stores often impose a charge for single-use bags.
- Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t withstand wind well.
- Participate in unique events – they create engaging tales.
- Don’t be disheartened if you feel out of place – it’s a common feeling at the beginning.
You don’t need to have everything sorted on your first day. By reading this, you are already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. So take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
