By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing
Stepping into London for the first time felt overwhelming. The city appeared enormous, bustling, and frenetic. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was disoriented. If you find yourself in a comparable situation, there’s no need for concern. Here’s how to adapt to London prior to your arrival at Imperial, ensuring you can appreciate the city.
No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or right before the semester starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.
Prioritize Finding Accommodation
Sidestep expensive hotel bills by arranging living accommodations early. I was lucky, but many are not. Search for a location close to campus or connected to a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for morning classes.
Key Life Administrative Tasks
Upon your arrival, take care of these important tasks:
- Money transfers – International students require budget-friendly options for transferring funds. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide competitive rates.
- UK SIM card – Necessary for navigation and communication. Obtain one as soon as possible.
- Bank account – Digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish an account for everyday expenses and part-time job payments.
- Student ID card – This is vital for utilizing campus services and student discounts. Make sure to collect it quickly.
Maximize Your First Week at Imperial
Your initial week is essential for meeting roommates, fellow students, and friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student clubs and organizations. Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I forged close friendships during campus tours and society activities. This week shapes your university journey.
Be Smart with Travel in London
At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced travel fares. Nonetheless, walking remains an excellent way to uncover and enjoy hidden treasures.
Identify Your Relaxation Spots
London can feel intense, so discover a place where you feel at ease. My go-to is a nearby park where I unwind. Another favorite spot is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I catch movies every week. Locate your own spaces, like a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to decompress.
Discover the City
Acquaint yourself with the surroundings of campus and your residence. Identify local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and preferred eating places. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and take pleasure in spontaneous strolls. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting a little lost.
Final Thoughts for Starting at Imperial
- Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas don’t hold up well in windy weather.
- Participate in unusual events for unforgettable experiences.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s a common experience initially.
You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already further along than I was. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
