Stepping into London for the first time, the city appeared vast. It was noisy, fast-moving, and somewhat daunting. Equipped with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain of where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position soon, there’s no need to panic. Here’s my guidance to help you adjust to London life before beginning at Imperial, ensuring you can fully embrace your new city adventure.

Whether you’re arriving weeks early or just before the term kicks off, here is the advice I wish I had received when I got here.

First Priority: Find Accommodation

Prevent the high expenses of hotels by organizing your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the best options disappear quickly. Look for a place near your campus or close to a reliable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Crucial Life Admin

As soon as you reach London, make sure to focus on these tasks:

  • Transfer of funds – As an international student, discover a budget-friendly method to send money from home. Solutions like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Get a UK SIM card promptly to ensure you have data for maps and directions.
  • Setting up a bank account – Some banks ask for a UK address, but digital options like Monzo or Starling are fast and friendly to students. Having a bank account is crucial for daily transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card – This card allows access to campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Significance of the First Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is vital for your university experience. It’s the opportunity to meet flatmates, classmates, and new friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that appeal to you.

Even if you feel shy, make an effort to get involved. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university journey.

Smart Navigation in London

During my first week, unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, I walked nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic but unforgettable – however, don’t make my mistake. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares.

Regardless, walking remains the finest way to experience the city and its culture. London has countless hidden treasures waiting to be found on foot.

Find Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally taxing, particularly at first. Finding a comfort zone is helpful – mine is a nearby park where I visit daily to unwind. My second spot is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy a movie weekly.

Establish your own relaxing places, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. These locations provide a much-needed break in the vibrant city.

Discover the City!

Get familiar with commonly visited areas around your campus and residence. Identify your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee spots.

Explore iconic landmarks and dedicate weekends to discovering your new city. Visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and stroll around without a set plan. Some of your best memories will come from embracing a little uncertainty!

Final Insights Before Diving into Imperial Life

  • Use a reusable bag – shops often charge for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are ineffective against windy rain.
  • Participate in unique events – they make for memorable stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel lost – it’s entirely normal at the beginning.

There’s no need to have everything sorted from day one. By reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I started at Imperial. So, take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
