Stepping into London for the first time was nothing short of daunting. The city appeared immense, noisy, and incredibly fast-moving. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar scenario, don’t stress. Here’s some guidance to help you adjust to your new life in London before your journey at Imperial commences, allowing you to savor your time in the city as a newcomer.

No matter if you arrive a few weeks in advance or right before the term kicks off, here’s the insight I wish I’d gotten when I first landed.

Secure Accommodation First

To avoid expensive hotel bills, make arrangements for your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the prime options fill up fast. Seek a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for those early classes.

Key Life Administration

As soon as you’re in London, tackle these essentials swiftly:

  • Money Transfers: As an international student, discover a dependable and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide advantageous exchange rates.
  • UK SIM Card: Acquire one promptly to make sure you have mobile data for navigating around the new city.
  • Bank Account: Some banks require a UK address, but online banks such as Monzo or Starling are prompt and beneficial for students. Set up an account for your day-to-day expenses and earnings from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID Card: This is vital for accessing campus buildings, libraries, and discounts for students. Obtain it as quickly as possible.

The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s when you’ll meet flatmates, peers, and potential lifelong friends. Participate in Welcome Week activities to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re a bit reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I did, and formed some of my dearest friendships while touring the campus and attending society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.

Travel Wisely in London

<pDuring my first week, I struggled to comprehend the Tube and bus systems and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. While it was unforgettable, it was also chaotic. Secure your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable travel on the Tube and buses. Walking is still a fantastic way to discover and uncover hidden treasures within the city.

Locate Your Comfort Zones

London can be intense, particularly at the start. Having a comforting space is beneficial. For me, it’s a local park I visit daily to unwind. My second spot is the O2, just ten minutes away, where I catch movies weekly. Identify your own spots, like a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can relax and reset.

Discover the City

Familiarize yourself with your frequently visited areas around campus and home. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee locations. Explore famous landmarks and dedicate weekends to uncovering the city. Visit free museums, ride a double-decker bus for the views, and meander without a strict plan. Some of your finest memories will arise from those moments when you wander a bit off track.

Final Advice for Starting at Imperial

  • Use a reusable bag to sidestep fees for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas can be ineffective in windy weather.
  • Join unusual events for unique stories to tell.
  • Don’t fret if you find yourself feeling aimless at first; it’s completely natural.

You don’t need to have all the answers on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
