Upon arriving in London for the very first time, the city seemed vast, noisy, fast-moving, and a tad overwhelming. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps at hand, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re facing a similar predicament, there’s no need for concern. Here’s how to get your new life in London organized before you begin at Imperial, enabling you to enjoy your initial days in the city.

Whether you come weeks ahead or just moments before the term begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.

First things first: secure a place to stay

Steer clear of expensive hotels by booking accommodations in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the top choices go fast! Seek a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line – early morning lectures are challenging if you’re more than an hour away.

Essential tasks: organizing the must-haves

Once you settle in London, tackle these essentials without delay:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy, cost-effective way to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigation, particularly in an unfamiliar area. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan soon after your arrival.
  • Bank account – while some banks need a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Establish an account for regular transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – this provides access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

The first week at Imperial is crucial

Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s when you’ll encounter flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Dive into Welcome Week, discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and enroll in activities that appeal to you.

Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I did and formed close friendships during campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the tone for your university journey.

Exploring London: travel wisely

During my initial week, I didn’t grasp the Tube or bus system, causing me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable – don’t make the same mistake. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel the Tube and buses affordably.

Nevertheless, walking remains the best way to absorb the city and its culture. London harbors hidden treasures you can uncover by roaming.

Discover your favorite spots

London might feel daunting, particularly at first. Finding a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I relax daily. My second favorite is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy weekly movie screenings.

Identify your own spots, be it a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench. These places provide relaxation and rejuvenation, proving to be more helpful than one might assume.

And make sure to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequently visit around campus and at home. Locate your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee venues.

Go to iconic landmarks, explore free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for the views, and wander aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will stem from the moments when you get a little lost!

Final pieces of advice before immersing yourself in Imperial student life

  • Grab a reusable bag – shops typically charge for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t keep you dry in gusty winds.
  • Say yes to unique events – they create great stories.
  • Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – everyone experiences this at first.

You don’t need to have everything figured out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial – so take a deep breath, get your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
