Stepping into London for the first time can be quite daunting with its enormity, clamor, and brisk tempo. With little more than a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself at a loss on where to start. If this is your upcoming experience, don’t fret. Here’s how to establish your new life in London prior to beginning at Imperial, so you can revel in the city.

Regardless of whether you arrive several weeks early or just before the term begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.

Top priority: find housing

Steer clear of expensive hotels by sorting out your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the best choices vanish swiftly. Strive to reside near your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early lectures.

Crucial life administrative tasks

As soon as you reach London, tackle these essentials immediately:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy, cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide more favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – make sure you have data for navigation by acquiring a UK SIM card right away.
  • Bank account establishment – some banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and student-friendly. Open an account for day-to-day expenses and potential part-time employment.
  • Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as quickly as you can.

Significance of the first week at Imperial

Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital for shaping your student experience. It’s the time you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re timid, challenge yourself to participate. I did and formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society fairs. Your first week establishes the groundwork for your university journey.

Effective travel in London

During my first week, I traversed nine kilometers across London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. It was an unforgettable yet hectic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares.

Walking remains the finest way to truly absorb the city and its culture, uncovering hidden treasures.

Identify your relaxing spots

London can be emotionally taxing at first. Discover a comforting location, such as a nearby park, café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recalibrate. These areas can be more beneficial than you might realize.

Discover the city!

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and home. Find local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred food or coffee venues.

Visit iconic landmarks, explore complimentary museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and roam without a predetermined plan. Some of your finest memories will emerge from getting a little lost!

Last pointers before embarking on Imperial life

  • Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket since umbrellas can be ineffective against the wind.
  • Participate in unique events for the best tales.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented at first; it’s a common feeling.

There’s no requirement to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I commenced at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
