Initially, arriving in London was quite intense. The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt uncertain about where to begin. If you find yourself in a similar boat, there’s no need to panic. Here’s how to set your new life in London on the right path before your time at Imperial kicks off, allowing you to savor your new city experience.

No matter if you’re getting here early or right before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure your living arrangements

It’s important to arrange your accommodation as soon as possible to prevent pricey hotel expenditures. I got lucky, but the best options disappear quickly. Opt for a location near the campus or close to a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes to your morning lectures.

Managing life: key essentials to handle

Once you arrive in London, take care of these essentials:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, find an efficient and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain one swiftly to ensure you have data for navigation in a new area.
  • Bank account – digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Set up an account for daily expenses and payments from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card – necessary for access to campus, library services, and student discounts. Aim to collect it as soon as you can.

Your first week at Imperial matters

The first week is vital for your overall student experience. Get to know your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week activities to dive into over 350 student-run clubs and societies, and sign up for events that pique your interest.

Even if you’re feeling shy, make an effort to join in. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. The tone for your university experience is set during this crucial week.

Mastering London: travel wisely

During my initial week, I was puzzled by the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable yet frantic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on public transport.

Walking remains an excellent way to see the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Establish your serene spots

London can feel quite daunting, particularly at the beginning. Locate a comforting place, like a park or café, where you can unwind and recharge. I have my go-to spots, which include a nearby park and the O2, where I indulge in a movie every week.

Discover your own comforting locations within the city.

Discover the city

Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your favorite eateries.

Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy a double-decker bus ride for scenic views. Embrace the occasional feeling of getting lost; it often leads to unforgettable moments.

Last pointers for starting at Imperial

  • Carry a reusable bag to avoid paying for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren’t very useful in strong winds.
  • Participate in unique events to create great stories.
  • Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented; it’s a common feeling at first.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
