Arriving in London for the initial time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, noisy, and energetic. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to life in London before commencing your journey at Imperial, allowing you to make the most of your fresh experience in the city.

Whether you’re arriving well in advance or just before the semester, here’s the guidance I wish I had when I first got here.

Secure Accommodation

Prevent costly hotel expenses by arranging your housing in advance. I was lucky, but others may not be. The best accommodations get taken quickly, so aim for something close to your campus or a dependable Tube route. Long distances aren’t favorable for early morning classes.

Essential Life Admin

Upon your arrival in London, make these your priorities:

  • Money transfers – International students require a dependable method to transfer funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Having data is essential for getting around. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.
  • Bank account – Some banks may ask for a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Open an account for your transactions and part-time earnings.
  • Student ID card – This is crucial for entering campus buildings, using the library, and obtaining student discounts. Make sure to pick it up promptly.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial holds great importance. It’s the time you’ll meet flatmates, fellow students, and potential friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re feeling introverted, put yourself out there. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society fairs. This week will set the foundation for your university experience.

Smart Travel in London

During my inaugural week, I had little understanding of the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers throughout London. It was unforgettable yet hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares. Walking remains an excellent way to venture and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be a lot to handle. Having a comforting place can be beneficial. For me, it’s the park close to my home and the O2 for films. Discover your own favored locations, be it a cafe, a bookstore, or a riverside seat, where you can unwind and refresh.

Go Explore!

Take the time to familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate nearby grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and your favorite dining spots. Check out iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will come from wandering a bit off the beaten path.

Final Recommendations

  • Carry a reusable bag – Stores impose charges for single-use ones.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas don’t perform well in gusty weather.
  • Participate in unique events – They provide wonderful tales.
  • Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – It’s typical at the beginning.

You don’t need to have it all figured out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
