Stepping foot in London for the very first time was a truly overwhelming experience. The city appeared vast, noisy, and full of energy, leaving me uncertain about where to start with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps. If you’re preparing for a similar adventure, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to aid you in adjusting to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, ensuring you can appreciate the city to the fullest.

Whether you’re arriving a couple of weeks in advance or just prior to the term’s commencement, here’s the counsel I wish I had received when I first landed.

First things first: secure your accommodation

Book your housing early to steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the best choices disappear swiftly. Try to locate a place nearby your campus or close to a dependable Tube line, since lengthy commutes can be challenging with early morning classes.

Administrative tasks: organizing the essential items

Upon reaching London, there are several key matters to take care of:

  • Money transfers – if you’re an international student, discover a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from your home country. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – having access to data is vital for navigating a new area. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after landing.
  • Bank account – some banks require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.
  • Student ID card – this is necessary for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Get it as soon as you can.

The first week at Imperial is paramount

Your initial week at Imperial is critical for your student experience. It’s the time to connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and enroll in activities that catch your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, attempt to engage. I did, and I found some of my nearest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week lays the foundation for your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I struggled to comprehend the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London for exploration. It was chaotic but unforgettable. Don’t make the same error. Acquire a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to navigate London without overspending.

Walking remains a fantastic way to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Locate your comfortable spots

London can be quite intimidating, especially at the start. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I go to unwind. My other go-to place is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy a movie weekly.

Discover your own comfort locations, be it a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river. These spots can offer a necessary retreat.

And remember to explore!

Acquaint yourself with your new environment, including local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your favorite dining or coffee establishments.

Visit iconic landmarks and spend weekends discovering the city. Enjoy free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your best moments will arise from getting a bit lost!

Final advice before you dive into Imperial student life

  • Utilize a reusable bag – stores often charge for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective during windy conditions.
  • Embrace unique events – they create excellent stories.
  • Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – it’s typical at the beginning.

You don’t need to have everything sorted from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
