Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared massive, noisy, and fast-moving. Armed with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost on where to start. If this is your upcoming experience, don’t fret. Here are some tips to assist you in settling down before commencing your journey at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new life in the city.

Whether you come early or just as the term begins, here’s the guidance I wish I had received when I arrived.

First things first: secure your accommodation

Steer clear of costly hotel expenses by arranging your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that privilege. The prime options get taken up fast! Seek a place in proximity to your campus or near a dependable Tube line – extensive journeys aren’t ideal for early morning classes.

Administrative essentials: organizing the must-haves

Once you’re in London, promptly take care of these essentials:

  • Money transfers – if you’re an international student, find an economical method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide good exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigating a new city. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan right away.
  • Bank account – some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and cater to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card – this is essential for accessing campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

The initial week at Imperial is key

Your first week at Imperial is pivotal for your student life. It’s when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-run clubs and societies and join in on activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re introverted, attempt to get involved. I did and built lasting friendships during campus tours and society fairs. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Navigating London: travel wisely

In my first week, I didn’t grasp the Tube or buses, ending up walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable experience but quite chaotic – don’t make the same mistake. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for cheaper fares on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains the best way to fully engage with the city and its culture. London is filled with hidden treasures you’ll uncover by simply exploring.

Discover your comfort spots

London can feel emotionally intense, particularly at the start. Having a comforting place is beneficial – mine is a local park where I go daily to decompress. Another is the O2, just a 10-minute trek, where I catch movies weekly to unwind.

Locate your own personal havens, be it a cafe, bookshop, or a bench by the river. These are great for relaxing and recharging.

And don’t overlook exploration!

Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, as well as your favorite dining or coffee spots.

Explore iconic landmarks and spend your weekends discovering your new city. Visit free museums, hop on a red double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will emerge from getting a bit lost!

Final pointers before you dive into Imperial student life

  • Grab a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use bags.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t very effective in strong winds.
  • Attend unique events – they will provide wonderful tales to share.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a typical feeling at the outset.

You don’t need to have everything sorted by day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial – so take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
