Arriving in London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city seemed vast, noisy, and filled with energy. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself uncertain about how to start. If you’re about to go through this experience, don’t fret. Here are my tips to help you acclimate to London before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to embrace your new city life.
Whether you’re coming in weeks ahead or just before classes start, here’s the guidance I wish I’d had.
First step: secure your accommodation
Skip the high-cost hotel stays by securing your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The top options are snatched up quickly, so aim for a place close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for early classes.
Essential tasks: taking care of the basics
Once in London, tackle these necessary tasks without delay:
- Transfer funds – as an international student, find an affordable and trustworthy way to transfer money from your home country. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- Get a UK SIM card – acquire one immediately for mobile data and directions in your new surroundings.
- Open a bank account – while some banks need a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and student-friendly. Establish an account for day-to-day transactions and part-time job payments.
- Obtain your student ID card – indispensable for accessing campus facilities, library resources, and student discounts. Collect it as soon as possible.
Your first week at Imperial is key
The initial week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I found some of my closest friends during campus tours and society booths. This week shapes your overall university experience.
Getting around London: travel intelligently
In my first week, I walked nine kilometers across London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. It was a memorable experience but rather chaotic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fares on the Tube and buses. Walking is still a wonderful way to uncover hidden treasures in the city.
Discover your favorite spots
London can be a lot to handle emotionally. Having a personal haven helps – mine is a park nearby where I go each day to unwind. The O2, just 10 minutes away, is another place I relax weekly with a movie. Discover your own spots, like a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can take a breather and recharge.
And remember to explore!
Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and your home. Find the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your go-to food or coffee places. Check out iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the view. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from unplanned explorations.
Essential reminders before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life
- Get a reusable shopping bag – stores charge for single-use options.
- Purchase a waterproof coat – umbrellas don’t hold up well against the wind.
- Participate in unique events – they often lead to the best stories.
- Feeling disoriented is completely normal – don’t stress about it at the start.
You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
