Stepping into London was a daunting experience; the city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. Armed with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here’s how to kick off your new life in London before you embark on your journey at Imperial, allowing you to relish the joy of being a newcomer in the city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before classes commence, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.

Locate Accommodation

Prevent costly hotel stays by securing housing promptly. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the finest options are snatched up quickly. Aim for a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line, since lengthy commutes are not ideal for early morning lectures.

Essential Administrative Tasks

When you arrive in London, promptly tackle these important tasks:

  • Money Transfers – As an international student, identify a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.
  • UK SIM Card – Make sure you have data for navigation by acquiring a UK SIM card quickly.
  • Bank Account – Some banks require a UK address, but digital options like Monzo or Starling are fast and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time employment.
  • Student ID Card – This provides access to campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Obtain it as quickly as possible.

Your First Week at Imperial Matters

Your inaugural week at Imperial is pivotal for shaping your student experience. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I made close friends during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. The first week will establish the tone for your university experience.

Smart Travel in London

During my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers around London. It was memorable yet hectic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares. Walking is also a fantastic way to uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally intense. Having a comfort area helps – mine is a local park. I visit daily to relax and recharge. The O2, just a 10-minute walk away, is another place I frequent weekly for a movie. Identify your own locations, like a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and rejuvenate.

Explore Your Surroundings

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods around campus and your residence. Identify the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee venues. Visit renowned landmarks, free museums, and enjoy a ride on a red double-decker bus for the scenic view. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering a bit off the beaten path.

Final Suggestions Before Starting at Imperial

  • Get a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use bags.
  • Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective against wind.
  • Accept invitations to unusual events – they generate fantastic stories.
  • Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – it’s perfectly normal at the start.

You don’t have to have everything figured out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I commenced my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
