Landing in London was quite a lot to take in; the city seemed vast, noisy, and full of energy. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament soon, there’s no need to stress. Here’s my guidance for adjusting to life in London prior to beginning at Imperial, allowing you to savor your new urban experience.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before your term starts, here’s what I wish I had been informed about.

First step: secure accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotel bills by organizing your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the prime options get snatched up quickly. Try to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.

Essential life admin tasks

Upon your arrival in London, tackle these key tasks:

  • Money transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy and cost-effective method for transferring funds from your home country. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain one right away for data and navigation in your new surroundings.
  • Bank account – certain banks require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Establish an account for transactions and part-time employment payments.
  • Student ID card – obtain it swiftly for access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts.

Importance of your first week at Imperial

Your initial week is vital for your student journey. It’s a time for meeting flatmates, fellow students, and potential friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re naturally reserved, challenge yourself to take part. I formed lasting friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Travel smart in London

At first, I struggled to understand the Tube and buses, walking nine kilometers across London. It was an experience I won’t forget but quite chaotic – avoid making my mistake. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares.

Nonetheless, walking remains an excellent way to immerse yourself in the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Find your comfort places

Initially, London can be a lot to take emotionally. Having a comforting spot is beneficial – mine is a nearby park that I visit daily to unwind. My second favorite place is the O2, just a ten-minute walk away, where I catch movies weekly.

Seek out your own preferred places, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.

Explore the city!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and your residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favored dining or coffee locations.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will come from getting slightly lost!

Final tips before starting at Imperial

  • Utilize a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for single-use ones.
  • Purchase a waterproof coat – umbrellas are inadequate in windy conditions.
  • Participate in unique events – they create memorable stories.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling initially.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began my journey at Imperial. Take a moment, get your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
