Stepping foot in London for the first time was a mind-boggling experience. The city felt vast, noisy, and filled with energy. With just a suitcase and Google Maps at my side, I felt lost on where to start. If you’re about to embark on a similar adventure, fear not. Here’s my guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to relish the novelty of being in this city.

Whether you arrive a few weeks earlier or right before the term starts, here’s the counsel I wish I had received when I first landed.

Secure Your Accommodation

To dodge pricey hotel bills, arrange your lodging well in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, as the best choices are snatched up quickly. Try to find somewhere close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to simplify those early morning travels.

Administrative Essentials: What to Organize

As soon as you reach London, make the following a priority:

  • Money transfers – For international students, locating a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer money is vital. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Lacking data makes navigating an unfamiliar place tough. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after you arrive.
  • Setting up a bank account – Some banks demand a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Open a bank account for everyday transactions and any payments from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card – This card enables access to campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Secure it as quickly as you can.

The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is pivotal for your student experience. It’s the opportunity to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage with Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and participate in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you consider yourself shy, challenge yourself to join in. I pushed myself, and I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.

Getting Around London: Travel Wisely

In my initial week, I had little understanding of the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but chaotic. Avoid repeating my mistake by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for affordable Tube and bus travel.

Walking remains the most excellent way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture, uncovering hidden treasures throughout London.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

Initially, London can feel emotionally overwhelming. Having a refuge helps – mine is the park near my home, where I visit daily to unwind. Another is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I escape weekly to watch a movie.

Find your own comforting places, whether a café, bookstore, or bench by the river. These areas offer a chance to relax and recharge, proving to be more beneficial than you might expect.

Discover!

Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee spots.

Explore iconic sites, check out free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for a scenic experience. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering without a specific plan.

Final Suggestions Before Diving into Imperial Student Life

  • Utilize a reusable bag – Stores frequently charge for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas are insufficient against rain driven by the wind.
  • Participate in unique events – They often lead to the most memorable stories.
  • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – It’s a typical experience at the outset.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was upon starting at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
