Landing in London for the first time was astonishing. The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain where to start. If this is your upcoming experience, don’t fret. Here are some tips to help you acclimate to your new life in London before your journey at Imperial begins, enabling you to savor everything the city provides.
Regardless of whether you arrive a few weeks in advance or just before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received upon my arrival.
Secure Your Housing
To avoid pricey hotel accommodations, lock down your housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the best options vanish quickly. Aim to locate a place near your campus or a dependable Tube line to steer clear of lengthy commutes to early classes.
Administrative Tasks: Key Things to Organize
Upon arriving in London, focus on these critical tasks:
- Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy and cost-effective method to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one promptly for data and navigation in a new region.
- Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and student-friendly. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time work payments.
- Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.
Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your first week at Imperial is pivotal. It’s the opportunity to connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Take part in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you tend to be reserved, make an effort to get involved. I forged some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society booths. Your initial week will set the foundation for your university journey.
Getting Around London: Travel Wisely
During my inaugural week, I struggled to navigate the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was unforgettable yet hectic. Don’t follow in my footsteps. Acquire a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced Tube and bus fares.
Walking remains an excellent method to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Identify Your Relaxation Spots
London can be emotionally taxing. Having a go-to spot is beneficial – mine is a nearby park where I go to unwind. The O2, a mere 10 minutes away, is another location where I relax with a film.
Discover your personal relaxation spots, whether it be a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge and regroup.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and your residence. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred food or coffee joints.
Tour iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from getting a bit lost!
Additional Advice for Starting at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – stores charge for single-use bags.
- Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t fare well in the wind.
- Join unconventional events – they lead to great anecdotes.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s common initially.
You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
