Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in, with its size and fast-paced life. Equipped only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to go through this, don’t stress. Here’s my guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before you begin at Imperial, making the most of your new urban life.
Whether you arrive weeks in advance or right before classes start, here’s what I wish I had known upon my arrival.
Secure Accommodation Early
Prevent expensive hotel fees by arranging accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone enjoys that privilege, as prime locations are taken quickly. Aim for a spot close to your campus or near a reliable Tube line to make those early commutes smoother.
Important Administrative Tasks
When you arrive, focus on these key tasks:
- Transferring money: As an overseas student, look for a dependable, cost-effective method to send money. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.
- UK SIM card: Obtain one immediately for data access and navigation in your new surroundings.
- Bank account: Digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are quick and friendly to students. Set up an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time work.
- Student ID card: This is essential for accessing campus resources, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it at your earliest convenience.
The Importance of Imperial’s First Week
Your initial week at Imperial is crucial for your student experience. Get to know your flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week, check out over 350 student clubs and societies, and sign up for activities that catch your interest.
Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I did and made close friends during spontaneous campus tours and society fairs. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.
Smart Travel in London
During my first week, I traversed nine kilometers through London, unaware of the Tube or buses. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for budget-friendly travel on the Tube and buses.
Regardless of this, walking remains the finest way to absorb the city and its culture. Unearth hidden treasures by exploring on foot.
Identify Your Comfort Zones
London can feel emotionally intense at the start. Having a comfort zone is beneficial. For me, it’s the local park and the O2, where I relax by catching a movie each week.
Discover your own relaxation spots, like a cafe, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, to unwind and reset. It’s more advantageous than you might realize.
Discover the City
Get acquainted with neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred eateries or coffee shops.
Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will come from wandering aimlessly!
Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag to avoid paying for single-use ones.
- Invest in a waterproof coat; umbrellas struggle in the wind.
- Join unique events for unforgettable stories.
- Don’t fret if you feel disoriented at first; that’s perfectly normal.
You don’t have to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
