Stepping into London for the first time was an intense experience. The city felt immense, noisy, and bustling. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I had a sense of bewilderment. If you are about to begin a similar adventure, there’s no need to be anxious. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before your time at Imperial, ensuring you fully embrace your new urban lifestyle.

Whether you arrive a few weeks ahead or just in time for the term, here’s the advice I wish I’d had upon getting here.

Securing Housing

Arrange your housing early to steer clear of pricey hotel costs. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the most desirable spots fill up fast. Strive to reside near your campus or close to a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy trips to early classes.

Crucial Life Administration

Upon arriving in London, focus on these essentials:

  • Money transfers – As an international student, discover an economical method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Keep connected with a UK SIM card and data plan to help navigate your new environment.
  • Bank account – Set up a bank account without delay for everyday transactions and possible part-time employment. Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly.
  • Student ID card – Acquire your student ID card to access campus resources, libraries, and student discounts.

Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is vital for your experience as a student. It’s a chance to meet roommates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week activities, check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and engage in what piques your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, strive to take part. I did and cultivated lasting friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Smart Transportation in London

At first, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and ended up trekking nine kilometers to explore. While it was a memorable experience, it’s not practical. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically on public transport.

Walking remains an excellent way to uncover the city and its hidden treasures.

Discovering Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally taxing. Having a comforting place aids – mine is a local park I visit daily to unwind. The O2, just a 10-minute walk away, is another preferred spot for catching a movie.

Identify your own relaxing places, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to help you unwind in the city.

Exploration is Essential

Get to know frequently visited spots around your campus and residence. Find your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining locations.

Explore iconic landmarks, check out free museums, and savor the view aboard a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering a bit off the beaten path.

Last Pieces of Advice for Beginning at Imperial

  • Use a reusable bag to avoid extra charges for single-use ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket for those blustery, rainy days.
  • Join in on unusual events for unforgettable experiences.
  • Don’t stress if you feel disoriented at first – it’s completely normal.

There’s no pressure to have it all sorted from the get-go. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and grocery trip at a time.
