Stepping foot in London for the very first time was quite a lot to handle. The city appeared enormous, noisy, and full of energy. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost on where to start. If you’re about to face this, have no fear. Here’s your guide to acclimating to London prior to commencing at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new urban life.

Whether you arrive several weeks ahead of term or just in time, here’s the wisdom I wish I had encountered.

Secure Accommodation

Prevent expensive hotel fees by organizing your housing in advance. I got lucky, but not everyone has that privilege. The finest options vanish fast! Target a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long travels for early classes.

Managing Life: Key Essentials

Once you’re in London, make these tasks your priority:

  • Money transfers – as an overseas student, seek a trustworthy, cost-effective method for transferring money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – having data is critical for navigating. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan soon after your arrival.
  • Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish an account for routine transactions and income from part-time jobs.
  • Student ID card – this provides access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it without delay.

The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial holds great importance. It’s the time to connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re a bit reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I formed meaningful friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society showcases. This week will shape the essence of your university experience.

Navigating London: Smart Travel

Throughout my first week, I struggled with understanding the Tube or buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was quite an experience but also chaotic. Avoid my error. Obtain a Student Oyster card and register for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover hidden treasures around the city.

Discover Your Places of Comfort

London can be emotionally heavy. Identifying a comfort zone is beneficial. Mine is a nearby park I frequent daily for a moment of calm. The O2, merely a 10-minute walk away, is another treasured spot for catching movies and unwinding. Seek out your own havens, such as a cozy cafe, bookstore, or a peaceful bench by the river, to recharge and refresh.

Embark on Your Exploration!

Become familiar with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Pinpoint the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred spots for meals or coffee. Tour well-known landmarks, explore complimentary museums, hop on a red double-decker bus, and meander without a specific agenda. Some of your fondest memories will emerge from moments of getting a bit lost!

Final Insights Before You Dive into Imperial Life

  • Keep a reusable bag handy – stores typically charge for disposable ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas tend to fail in strong winds.
  • Engage in unique events – they lead to fascinating stories.
  • Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at the start.

You don’t have to have it all figured out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I found myself. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure, one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
