By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing

Upon my initial arrival in London, I perceived the city as immense and somewhat daunting. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here are some tips to help you adjust to your new life in London before beginning at Imperial, enabling you to appreciate the city.

Whether you’re arriving well in advance or just before the semester starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Housing

Steer clear of expensive hotels by arranging accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune. Seek a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to facilitate early morning lectures.

Administrative Essentials

Address these necessities shortly after reaching London:

  • Fund transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy method for transferring money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – obtain one promptly for mobile data and navigation.
  • Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and cater to students.
  • Student ID card – vital for campus entry, library access, and obtaining discounts.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is vital for connecting with others and getting involved in clubs. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led organizations and societies.

Even if you’re not extroverted, make an effort to join in. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society meetups. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Get Around London: Travel Wisely

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, wandering nine kilometers across London. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.

Walking remains a fantastic way to roam and uncover hidden treasures in the city.

Locate Your Relaxation Spots

London can feel overwhelming. Discover a comforting location, such as a park or cafe, to unwind and recharge. My favorites include a local park and the O2 for film viewing.

Discover!

Get acquainted with your neighborhood, including grocery stores, pharmacies, and cafes. Explore iconic landmarks and wander the city without a specific agenda. Some of your greatest memories will arise from wandering a bit off the beaten path.

Additional Suggestions

  • Utilize a reusable bag to bypass fees for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket for blustery, rainy weather.
  • Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.
  • Don’t stress if you feel directionless; it’s a common feeling at the beginning.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re seeing this, you’re already ahead of the game. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure.
