Upon reaching London, the scale of the city felt vast. Everything appeared noisy, quick, and a bit daunting. With only a suitcase in one hand and Google Maps in the other, I was uncertain where to start. If you are about to embark on this journey, don’t panic. Here are some tips to assist you in settling into your new life in London before beginning at Imperial, so you can relish the city’s offerings.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term begins, here’s the advice I wished I had on my arrival.

Top Priority: Secure Housing

Prevent spending excessive amounts on hotel accommodations by organizing your housing in advance. I had luck on my side, but many do not, as the best choices vanish quickly. Aim to secure a spot close to your campus or a dependable Tube line; lengthy commutes can be challenging with early morning lectures.

Key Life Admin Tasks

Upon your arrival in London, tackle these essentials without delay:

  • Financial management – International students require a dependable, cost-effective method to transfer funds from their home country. Applications like Wise or Revolut can help bypass poor currency exchange rates.
  • Obtaining a UK SIM card – Navigating a new location is tough without data. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.
  • Establishing a bank account – Some banks may request a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and friendly to students. Set up a bank account for everyday transactions and part-time job earnings.
  • Picking up your student ID card – This card provides access to campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to examine over 350 student-led clubs and societies and enroll in activities that catch your interest.

Even if you feel shy, make an effort to engage. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. This first week sets the pace for your university adventure.

Travel Wisely in London

During my first week, I didn’t grasp the Tube or bus systems, so I ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable—don’t replicate my error. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable travel on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains a fantastic way to soak in the city and its culture, revealing hidden gems through exploration.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally intense at first. Finding a comfort zone is beneficial—mine is a nearby park where I go daily to unwind. Another is the O2, just a 10-minute walk away, where I enjoy a movie each week.

Find your own soothing places, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river. These locations offer essential relaxation and time to recharge.

Don’t Forget to Explore!

Get acquainted with the areas you frequent around campus and your residence. Locate your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your go-to spots for food or coffee.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the experience, and wander without a specific plan. Some of your most memorable moments will arise from getting a bit lost!

Final Reminders Before Diving into Imperial Life

  • Carry a reusable bag – Shops commonly charge for disposable ones.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas don’t work well in wind-driven rain.
  • Attend unique events – They often become the most memorable stories.
  • Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – It’s a typical initial feeling.

You don’t need to have everything sorted by day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
