**Musings on My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months prior, in October 2022, I found myself brimming with apprehension, anxiety, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the brink of commencing my journey as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. For someone who had always been quite introverted, plunging into something entirely new and unknown felt daunting. As I reflect on a year defined by growth, hurdles, and a fair share of enjoyment, I recognize how much I’ve evolved and the progress I’ve made.
### Confronting the Anxiety of Friendships
One of the most daunting obstacles I faced at the outset was forging friendships. For numerous new students, this can be one of the most terrifying aspects of starting university, and if you’re reading this as an incoming student, you might share this concern. On my first day in the student housing, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others.
Fast forward to now, and I can assert with confidence that I’ve developed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had. Here at Imperial, and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. It all began with brief conversations with others who were equally apprehensive.
So, what have I taken away from this experience? First, that initial leap of faith at the beginning of the year is invariably worthwhile. If you’re feeling unprepared or uncomfortable initially, that’s perfectly fine—there will be a myriad of icebreaker events and chances to engage with others. Second, embrace your true self. With such a diverse population at university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with your interests and principles.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another considerable challenge was acclimating to the workload and the complexity of the course material. The shift from A-levels to university was distinct, and the move from the first term to the second proved even more demanding. Being in such a rigorous environment can sometimes undermine your confidence, particularly when you observe others studying and feel as if you’re lagging.
What assisted me in overcoming this was the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If something is unclear, chances are others are grappling with it too. The crucial factor is to seek assistance. This might be the most significant lesson I gleaned during my first year—don’t hesitate to ask your peers or the teaching staff for help.
### Assistance from Faculty and Support Services
Speaking of faculty, I cannot stress enough how extraordinary the Materials department team is. They genuinely care about the success of students and show understanding of the challenges we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept open lines of communication, addressing our issues and providing assistance.
I didn’t take full advantage of the pastoral support available until later in the year, and in retrospect, I wish I had done so earlier. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which allowed me to establish connections with faculty members. This experience proved to be immensely valuable. There are numerous avenues to connect with staff, and doing so can significantly enhance your university journey. My primary takeaway here is to fully utilize the support systems at your disposal—you can never have too much help!
### Insights Gained
In summary, this year has illuminated the fact that the anxieties I experienced—both prior to starting university and throughout the year—were often unneeded. With the extensive support from staff and fellow students, I came to understand that I was never truly alone. I also learned how to navigate stress from exams and deadlines while still making room for enjoyment and relaxation.
Reflecting on the year, I recognize it as a period of personal development, new connections, and essential lessons. If you’re about to embark on your own university adventure, understand that while it may seem intimidating initially, it also presents a remarkable opportunity for growth, connection, and success.
