Visiting London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city seemed vast, noisy, and buzzing with activity. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain where to start. If you’re about to face this, relax. Here’s my guidance to ease your transition to London before beginning at Imperial, so you can relish the excitement of being a newcomer in the city.
Whether you come weeks in advance or right before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.
Find accommodation
Steer clear of pricey hotel rooms by arranging housing in advance. I was fortunate, but not everyone shares that luck, as the top choices are taken quickly. Strive for a location close to your campus or an efficient Tube line to minimize lengthy travels to early classes.
Get your life admin sorted
After arriving in London, promptly tackle these crucial tasks:
- Money transfers – as an overseas student, discover a trustworthy, cost-effective method to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide competitive rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one without delay for connectivity and navigation in your new surroundings.
- Bank account – some banks ask for a UK address, yet digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and catering to students. Establish an account for everyday spending and part-time job income.
- Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it at the earliest opportunity.
Maximize your initial week at Imperial
Your first week is pivotal for your student journey. Connect with your flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join the ones that excite you.
Challenge yourself to engage, even if you feel reserved. I formed solid friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. Your initial week will shape your university experience.
Navigate London wisely
At first, I walked nine kilometers through London, unfamiliar with the Tube or buses. It was unforgettable but disorganized. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares.
Walking remains the finest way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture, uncovering hidden treasures.
Discover your comfort zones
London can be emotionally intense. A comforting location can help – mine is a local park I visit daily to unwind. Another is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I catch films weekly.
Seek out your own havens, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.
Experience the city
Familiarize yourself with your surrounding areas near campus and home. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee establishments.
Explore iconic sites, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for the scenery, and wander aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will sprout from getting a bit lost!
Final pointers before embarking on your Imperial journey
- Bring a reusable bag – stores often charge for single-use options.
- Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas struggle against the wind.
- Seek out unique events – they provide fantastic stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s common for everyone at first.
You don’t need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and start your London narrative one bus journey and grocery stop at a time.
