Upon my initial arrival in London, its enormity left an impression on me. The city was bustling, dynamic, and somewhat intimidating. Armed with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain where to commence. If you are about to undertake this journey, fret not. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London prior to beginning your studies at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.
Regardless of whether you’re coming early or just before the semester starts, here’s the counsel I wish had been shared with me.
First and foremost: secure accommodation
Prevent costly hotel stays by arranging housing in advance. I was lucky, but many are not, as the top options disappear quickly. Strive for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes to early classes.
Administrative tasks: taking care of essential matters
Here are several essentials to address once you arrive in London:
- Money transfers – as an international student, find a dependable method to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
- UK SIM card – acquire one swiftly to ensure you have data for navigation in your new environment.
- Bank account – some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Establish an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.
- Student ID card – critical for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.
The initial week at Imperial is vital
Your inaugural week at Imperial is significant. It’s the time to meet flatmates, peers, and future friends. Engage with Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, endeavor to take part. I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society stalls. This week sets the foundation for your university journey.
Getting around London: travel wisely
In my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses. Still, walking is an excellent way to navigate the city and find hidden treasures.
Discover your favorite places
London can feel overwhelming, especially at the outset. Identifying a comforting location is beneficial. For me, it’s the park near my residence where I relax. My other spot is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I watch films weekly. Find your own places, whether a cafe, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, to recharge and unwind.
And remember to explore!
Familiarize yourself with your new environment around campus and home. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee spots. Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and enjoy a journey on a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will arise from a little wander!
Final recommendations before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life
- Get a reusable bag – shops frequently impose charges for single-use ones.
- Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas don’t fare well in windy conditions.
- Be open to unconventional events – they lead to memorable stories.
- Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – it’s common at the beginning.
You don’t have to have everything resolved on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood when I began at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London narrative one bus ride and supermarket visit at a time.
