Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to handle. The city seemed vast, noisy, and full of energy. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, there’s no need to panic. Here’s some guidance to ease your transition into London before your studies at Imperial begin, so you can make the most of your new urban adventure.
Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just prior to the term kick-off, these are the tips I wish I had been given upon my arrival.
Secure Accommodation
To avoid expensive hotel bills, make arrangements for your living situation early. I was lucky, but not everyone has that benefit, as the best places get taken quickly. Seek accommodation close to campus or near a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for morning classes.
Crucial Life Administrative Tasks
Upon reaching London, focus on these important tasks:
- Transferring Money: As an international student, it’s essential to find a trustworthy, cost-effective method to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.
- Obtain a UK SIM Card: Acquire one immediately for data access and navigation in your new surroundings.
- Open a Bank Account: While some banks stipulate a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling offer fast, student-oriented service. You’ll need an account for daily expenses and payments for part-time work.
- Student ID Card: This is crucial for gaining access to campus buildings, libraries, and eligibility for student discounts. Ensure you collect it as soon as feasible.
Maximize Your Initial Week at Imperial
Your first week is vital for establishing your student experience. It’s the time when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to learn about over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.
Even if you’re reserved, strive to get involved. I made the effort and ended up befriending some of my closest allies during spontaneous campus tours and society showcases. This week sets the tone for your university experience.
Navigate London Wisely
During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or bus systems, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an experience to remember, though rather hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and register for the 18+ discount for economical travel on the Tube and buses.
Walking remains an excellent way to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.
Discover Your Favorite Spots
London can be emotionally intense, especially at the beginning. Having a comforting area is beneficial. For me, it’s the park near my home, which I visit daily to relax. The O2, just a short 10-minute journey away, is another location where I unwind weekly with a film.
Identify your own comforting spaces, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a bench by the riverside. These areas can be more beneficial than you might expect.
Discover the City
Familiarize yourself with the key locations around your campus and residence. Find your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.
Visit iconic landmarks and dedicate weekends to exploring your new city. Check out free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the views, and meander aimlessly. Some of your best experiences will come from embracing a little unpredictability!
Final Words of Wisdom Before Joining Imperial
- Carry a reusable bag – stores often charge for single-use bags.
- Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t very effective in windy conditions.
- Participate in unusual events – they can create memorable stories.
- Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience.
There’s no need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one iconic bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.
