Arriving in London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to face this, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London before beginning your journey at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new life in the city.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks ahead or just before classes start, here’s what I wish I had known when I first arrived.

Secure Accommodation

Avoid pricey hotel costs by arranging your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is. The finest places get booked quickly, so look for somewhere near campus or close to a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes to early lectures.

Life Admin: Must-Haves

When you arrive in London, focus on these essential tasks:

  • Money transfers – International students require cost-effective methods to receive funds. Apps such as Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.
  • UK SIM card – Navigating a new city without data is challenging. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan right away.
  • Bank account – Some banks need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and accommodating for students. Set up an account for everyday banking and part-time job deposits.
  • Student ID card – This card allows access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as feasible.

The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is essential. It’s when you meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to join in. I made some of my closest friends during campus tours and society booths. This week lays the foundation for your university journey.

Getting Around London: Travel Wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable but hectic experience. Acquire a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically. Walking remains an excellent way to unearth hidden treasures in the city.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally intense. Having a go-to spot is helpful – mine is a nearby park where I retreat to unwind. The O2, just a 10-minute walk away, is another favorite venue for relaxation. Identify your own areas, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge and regroup.

Get Out and Explore!

Familiarize yourself with your frequently visited locations near campus and home. Identify nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred eateries. Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus for the scenery. Some of your fondest memories will arise from wandering about a bit.

Final Pointers Before You Begin at Imperial

  • Carry a reusable bag – Stores typically charge for single-use bags.
  • Invest in a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas are ineffective in windy conditions.
  • Participate in unique events – They yield terrific anecdotes.
  • Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – Everyone does at first.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.
